While recently planning my own wedding I found myself wanting to touch, taste and smell everything that went into my big day! And now, I want to share with you what caught my attention. Engagement rings, wedding band, and jewellery.
What’s the first thing you think of when you think ultimate wedding accessory? Diamonds! Whether you’re rocking the nine carat nugget like this. "Oh god I love this thing" or sporting the single stone, you want to make sure that your ring is absolutely perfect. Today I’m talking with a jeweller about diamonds and coordinating jewellery so you know what's hot and trending on your big day. Meet Sarah, she's our jewellery expert.
I think as a little girl you dream of your wedding ring and you dream of your wedding day and so I think it starts really at a very young age, um... but when it becomes a decision were couple makes together that they want to get married or a man makes that he's going to surprise his loved one with an engagement ring, that's when the process really starts ramp up.
Eighty five percent of the time we will see brides and grooms come in together and then he'll make the final decision with her not here and that seems to be the trend right now. It's very romantic when a groom to be comes in and chooses it all on his own and he usually has though some indication of a style that she might like or she has shown him a picture of something that she wants it to look like.
Ninety percent of the engagement rings that we sell are white gold or of the white metal family like platinum, palladium, and fourteen carat and eighteen carat white gold. You see a little bit of yellow and you see it trending on the coasts even more and especially in fashion jewellery, we see yellow gold’s resurgence and it's big and bold and fun pieces again, so don't be surprised if you see a lot of mixing going on with a white gold engagement ring, a yellow gold watch.
You see a lot of halos right now. A halo is when there are little diamonds all around the centre diamond. The bands that twist are very popular. The traditional diamond is the round diamond and the round is considered the most brilliant of all the diamond cuts, however the princess cut is very strong too. If it’s a non-traditional ring it’s usually a coloured stone in the centre, maybe a sapphire, a ruby, or a different gem stone that’s important to them.
Diamonds are cut by man better than machine and so we will still cut those diamonds by hand and a lot of times a cutter will be an apprentice for fifteen years before they are considered a cutter. Some of the more important rough pieces they may study for up to a year before they're actually cut, because if they're cut incorrectly it could shatter the diamond.
Guidelines are two months salary is spent usually on an engagement ring. We see that quite often, people coming in knowing a budget before. It's really a comfort level and it's also a priority level; some people that's a big priority is their ring. Things to think about before you choose a diamond ring would be your lifestyle. Are you adventurous, do you like to be outside, do you use your hands a lot, do you garden, do you landscape, do you rock climb? All those things are important to think of when you pick a ring because you’ll probably wear that ring every single day.
The Egyptians believed that the vein of love was directly connected into your left ring finger to your heart, and so this became the placement of the engagement ring because there was a vein of love, they believed, that was directly connected to the heart and so that's how tradition started on your left-hand, on your fourth finger. When you get a wedding ring you will have your daily life. You'll shampoo your hair, you'll use hairspray, lotion, gel... all of that will adhere to the diamond.
So we often recommend a jar of ring cleaner. We recommend just as you would in the morning brushing your teeth, just put your little ring in the ring cleaner and scrub it up with a tooth brush and then rinse it up with water.
A lot of times brides will bring in the picture of their dress, or a picture of themselves in the dress that they are going to wear for the day and then we'll look for a perfect necklace and the perfect ear rings to go with the dress. If the dress has a lot going on in the bodice part here, sometimes we'll say maybe no necklace, just some ear rings and we'll sell a lot of pearl earrings and a lot of the drop ear rings are popular right now and you can see we have some pearl drops right here. The pearl studs still are a classic piece of jewellery. Pearl is the symbol of a happy marriage and it’s also the symbol of purity and it’s just been a very symbolic piece of jewellery throughout the ages.
Also a lot of times we’ll see diamond necklaces for the bride. It’ll be just something not overstated, just something to add to their day, and maybe a diamond heart, a diamond circle, maybe just a diamond solitaire necklace. It's tradition for a groom to give their bride a present on the day of the wedding and so we'll try to sometimes coordinate that with what she's gonna wear that day. If it's something of a more significant or more important look like some diamonds then the groom might give it to her the night before their wedding or that morning of the wedding she'll receive this while she's getting dressed. A lot of times the bride will also buy the bridesmaids gifts and she will pick out some type of earring that will look good with the dresses that they are wearing.
